36 x 36 Inch Heavy Duty Square Fireplace Grate

Our Heavy Duty Square Fireplace Grates are built from 3/8 x 1 inch thick solid bar steel for added durability. Fireplace grates like these lift firewood up off the bottom of the pit to improve airflow to the fire. Their all-steel construction is designed to outperform their low quality cast-iron counterparts.

PLEASE NOTE - FINISH: This grate ships in its natural raw steel finish with no paint or coating - it is NOT painted black. We discontinued the temporary black coating we once applied to our grates: it was only cosmetic protection for warehousing and shipping, and it was never meant to survive the first few fires. Even high-heat paint burns off quickly in a fireplace, so any coated grate ends up looking like raw steel after the first couple of fires. Our product photos are dark and the steel can look black, but your grate will arrive unpainted, and light surface rust is normal - it burns off in use and is replaced by soot and creosote.

Optional Ember Retainer: Add the ember retainer and this grate ships with a matching Super Duty ember retainer plate. The retainer is a separate 1/4 inch thick steel plate with 1 inch round holes that sits on top of the grate across the ribs - it is not welded to the grate, so it lifts out for easy cleaning. It keeps hot coals and embers up close to the logs so firewood burns more completely while still allowing proper airflow. Sizes are named by the grate they fit, and the retainer itself is sized to the burn area of the grate, so it is smaller than the grate overall. Ember retainers for grates over 18 inches wide come as two interlocking pieces. Please note that ember retainers are a wear item: although ours are many times more durable than the thin expanded-metal retainers sold elsewhere, they are designed to be replaced if and when they wear out.
